These problems likely contribute to innocent people being convicted and guilty ones remaining free to commit more crimes. To date, 15 innocent people have been wrongfully convicted in Dallas, Texas and later exonerated through DNA evidence. Because of the now well-known problems at the Houston Police Department crime lab, which erroneously analyzed and presented the DNA evidence used to convict a demand for greater accountability and improvements in our justice system is a demand no one can afford not to make. When miscarriages of justice like these occur, we must have a mechanism for investigating and addressing their root causes.
