Question by Biff Smorner: If Oliver North’s 3 convictions were vacated by a federal appeals court, is he still a convicted felon?
I understand he was convicted by a federal jury in 1989 of 3 crimes. A federal appeals court vacated the convictions in 1990. Was his record completely erased (like juvenile records), or just his punishment?

If the conviction was vacated then he was found innocent of the charges. BTW – the charges werre lame anyway.

Question by Amanda: Where can you view federal court files that deal with criminal offenses?
There’s this guy that got in trouble with the FBI. The FBI came to his house one day unannounced and confiscated his computer, phone and photographs. Supposedly it is because he was downloading pornography involving minors and beastiality but he had to go to Federal Court a couple weeks ago and for whatever he did he was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in Federal Prison for which they have to ship him out of the state of Ohio to another state to do his time. He is free right now but has to report in 2 weeks to do his time. So whatever he did must not have been bad enough for them to keep him locked up until he goes to prison but I don’t see getting that much time for downloading porn even if it was illegal. Plus it’s his first offense…he has no prior records. He won’t tell any details to anyone.
I want to know if I can feel comfortable around this guy or if I need to watch over my shoulder so I am trying to find somewhere on the internet to view federal court public records but am having no luck what so ever. I know how to view public records dealing with municipal courts but can’t find anything dealing with federal. If anyone has any information please let me know.

I can’t help you on looking up the case, but it’s entirely possible to get that much prison time for child porn. The maximum punishments are ridiculously harsh like ten years PER PICTURE. It’s insane, so the actual sentence someone gets is just really random as far as I can tell, I guess it just depends on how good a lawyer they have and how cruel that particular judge is.
